Mayweed (stinking chamomile, dog fennel) has been used by beekeepers to help repel bees. We don't use gloves in the hive so I bet this would be great to rub on our hands when handling the hives. If I'm not mistaken, this plant grows along the roadsides at my parents' home in Louisiana!

Becca oh. are the centers black? you know which plant I'm talking about then? I was thinking it looked like this but you've seen it more recently!

Bill Huhman Hi Becca, How did this work out? Did you start a new hive with her?

Profile picture of Becca

Becca I have to tell you, I'm not sure what happened with our bees this spring. we had one queen emerge with deformed wing virus. lost several queen cells due to operator error and ended up re-queening both hives!

Profile picture of Bill Huhman

Bill Huhman I hadn't heard of queens having DWV, but operator error happens all the time up here. We call it "Huhman error" :)

Profile picture of Becca

Becca supposedly, DWV is rare in queens. we have lots of mites in this area. :(

Profile picture of Bill Huhman

Bill Huhman Amen to the mites! You'll have to pardon my age--first thing I thought of was from the Chickenman radio skits in the 60s, where the tagline was "He's everywhere! He's everywhere!". Ah, those were the days of innocence... http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

the beekeeper. I don't wear gloves but I DO wear a veil. Haven't opened the hive yet in this photo.
