Romanesque Motif: Beak-Head

Nestled in the historic center in a hilltop town in Puglia, Troia Cattedrale is worth seeking out. Begun in 1093, its extraordinary architecture combines Puglian Romanesque with strong Byzantine and Muslim influences. The rose window on the western facade, made of a delicate stone screen pierced with geometrical designs, is especially exquisite. Other highlights are the medieval bronze doors and the quiet, genteel old town of Troia itself.

Built in the 12th century after a miraculous vision by the local bishop, the cathedral of Assisi (Assisi Cattedrale; Duomo di San Rufino) is not anywhere near as famous as the Basilica di San Francesco, but it is well worth seeking out for its beautiful Romanesque facade and historic font.

Capital, 1100, Stone Saint-Pierre, Moissac According to the inscription, the cloister of Moissac was completed in 1100. It is the first one in which biblical stories and other scenes appear on the capitals. There are ten marble reliefs on the corner pillars, and 88 capitals, making it the largest decorated Romanesque cloister to have survived. The picture shows one of the capitals in the cloister.

Capital, c. 1100, Stone Collegiate Church of Saint-Sernin, Toulouse Two portals on the south side of the collegiate church of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse are important milestones of the development of Early Romanesque sculpture. The picture shows a capital on the Porte des Comtes in the south transept.

The Duomo di Parma or Parma Cathedral, located in the heart of Parma, Emilia-Romagna, is an important 12th-century Romanesque cathedral filled with Renaissance art. Its ceiling fresco by Correggio is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance fresco work.

Thanks to its possession of the relics of a virgin martyr, the Romanesque Abbey of St. Foy in Conques was an important stop on the medieval pilgrimage route and received rich gifts from pilgrims and kings.
