Bakelite or polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, is an early plastic. It is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed from an elimination reaction of phenol with formaldehyde, usually with a wood flour filler. It was developed in 1907 by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland. Michelle Racca Me too! But, this one was a fancy, colored, wall mount that we only saw on TV shows. Everyone I knew had a tabletop, black version with a small plastic covered slot for a sliver of paper with your handwritten phone number on it. I still remember that number! :)
