String Quilt Quilt; c. 1930-1950 Catherine Somerville; Aliceville, Alabama; cotton International Quilt Study Center, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Robert and Helen Cargo collection A string quilt derives its name from the fact that its panels are made from narrow, irregularly shaped scraps usually left over from dressmaking. String quilt by Texan Gazzie Hill. Blocks are approx 6". some blocks resemble Log Cabin blocks and others seem distinctly like specific patterns, including Hourglass. Certain red and white blocks appear to have been cut from larger completed blocks and reused as asymmetrical accents. Karey Bresenhan notes that there is a secret to this quilt: a crudely pieced scrap alphabet set out in no order and visible only by looking at the quilt from all directions.

string quilt by Square One Studio; August 2010-December 2011. Cotton fabric, thread and batting. New fabric mixed with vintage bits from Carol Lee's Mom's stash of quilting and sewing fabrics worked in throughout. The task was to create a quilt using the vintage bits that did not feature primary colors and would complement a gray chair--hence the wonky color scheme. But I like a challenge, it forces me to think outside the box and avoid falling back on familiar techniques and patterns.

nine patch medallion vintage quilt. 68 X 84, c. 1940-50. Made from workmen's uniforms. "A simple composition that has a powerful visual impact, like a contemporary painting that could be hung on a gallery wall".

Nontraditional construction technique: not quite string pieced and not quite log cabin style of foundation piecing. block size is 19" for the big diamond shape.

String Diamond Zigzag. Terrific complex graphic design that combines "string" or crazy pieced blocks with "homespun" diamonds in a viosually intriguing zigzag pattern. Trove of late 19th-early 20th century prints and checks.

Amazing modernist graphic design actually made from the woolens used for undershirts, petticoats. undergarments. From the Amish community around New Holland, Pennsylvania. Pieced like a crazy quilt with random rectangular slivers; arranged like a Roman Stripe with diagonal strips all in same direction to provide a visual rhythm.

"God's Eye" String Quilt, ca 1900, 70x79. Sort of a log cabin because it is pieced onto a foundation (machine and hand pieced). The black, solids and plaids are challis, henrietta, and poplins and other wool combinations, as is the backing.
