In the field of human relations, the kiss, I feel, is hugely underrated. There's an element of restraint with intense lip action which says 'we could be doing a helluva lot more right now but we won't, not just yet…let's hold this moment, live with the promise of what's coming and drink each other a while'. I confess I've enjoyed some fabulous lips in my time but shall refuse sentimentality, by treasuring my most recent and looking forward to my next…should I be so fortunate! [The Kiss, Rodin]

Visiting grandma as a kid was better than going to the zoo. Her big old place was a veritable menagerie, stuffed to the gills with cats, dogs, birds, strays of every description...and totally overrun by cute, fluffy bunnies! She said it reminded her of growing up on a farm. Mum didn't approve though we always enjoyed the evening stew following one of those visits. "Nowadays a woman's gotta hit a man." It was late so we found a room for the night. We'd had a drink so I was happy to lay where I fell, you know the routine. But my 'ex' had her eye on the bigger picture: she was seeing hairs in the soap, stains on the sheets and purple-green coloured mushroom growth in the toilet bowel. So she slapped me awake…and with a wry smile I argued back our tariff. We strode into the night...homeless, but breathing! [Painting by Jacek Yerka - The oceanic bathroom]
We've all had it right..? The dream where you 'wake' to see the alien with no mouth standing in the corner of the room, talking directly into your mind...saying stuff like: "Ah pity da fool". (Painting by Paul Klee b.1879 - Senecio)

I'll admit it, I've spent time alone in diners reading Kierkegaard. It was just a phase but I learned a lot about coffee. (Painting by Edward Hopper, Nighthawks 1942)

Most teenage boys have been embarrassed by their parents bursting into their room unexpectedly. Mum found me 'slam dancing' in front of the mirror one time. It didn't help that I hadn't finished with the 'exotic' mags lying open on the bed. (Drawing by Egon Schiele b.1890)

Jordan Compton Schiele's an art school staple, especially when it comes to fashion illustration.
The thing about "creatives" is their obsessive and never-ending search for inspiration. I have an 'ex' who'd regularly stare into space while listening to birdsong...which was slightly less irritating than the shamanic drumming she'd hum along to before bedtime. (Photo: August Bradley)

I knew a few people that lived on Beer Street. My mate Piet lived there for a while before moving to Gin Alley. Last I heard he was looking for a place on Absinthe Avenue. (Print by William Hogarth - Beer Street, 1751)

There's always one oddball family lives in your street. You know them because of the discarded TV sets and sofas that collect outside their front door, and the 5am police raids. I was pleased to hear that our oddballs had turned things around and done OK for themselves. (Painting by John Currin - The Kennedys 1996)

Some parents tell their kids the stork brought them. I was told I got grown in the garden. I believed that until I was 21. (Painting by Mark Ryden 2006 - Stump Baby)

I remember my first childish crush, on one of the sisters next door. The brunette. My mum was aghast and warded me off. I'm not sure why, it's not like we were playing 'doctors & nurses' or anything. (Painting by Mark Ryden - Allegory of the four elements 2006)

Let's face it everyone has the mad auntie. You know, the one that never married, never had kids, has a house full of cats and smells of moth balls...it's normal these days. (Painting by John Currin - Ms Omni 1993)

Fetching pins…
Jordan Compton One of my all-time favorites! I had the pleasure of seeing it at the Musée Rodin in Paris (I'd wager you've already been there).
Tony Eddicott You'd wager correctly! :)
