Masculinity in Media

Exploring depictions of masculinity in mass media as part of the work I do around gender and violence prevention.

Another foreign ad via Copyranter. This one for a Portuguese website named Vaibater.com (I don't read Portuguese, but it seems to be some sort of events related site). Anyway, I'm pinning this ad cause it features a bit of oh I dunno... DOMESTIC VIOLENCE? I mean, that's what I'd call a man headbutting his wife (replayed multiple times BTW) into unconsciousness so he can go out clubbing...

by Vai Bater

Avión Tequila is having some dominatrix fantasies...

by TequilaAvion

Translation (according to Copyranter): "The danger is in lack of mobile education!" ... actually I think the danger is the teacher. That is NOT how a teacher should look at one of his students...

Looking at this ad, I think my head just exploded! Translation (according to Copyranter): "Let’s make international relations stronger." ... WRONG! What they meant to say was: "lets make international relations worse by using some incredibly racist native caricatures straight out of the 1940s doing something completely sexist like jizzing in their pants (sorry, grass skirts) over a bikini clad white woman. International relations at their finest...

Translation (according to Copyranter): "Roaming is not a myth. Find out your price rate!" ... this ad almost has it all; upskirts, musclebound centaurs with flowing golden hair (minus the centaur genitalia of course, wouldn't want to offend anyone!)

Translation (according to Copyranter): "I prefer protected roaming!" If she were a real woman I'm sure she'd also prefer not having her ass leered at by creepy men parked in the middle of busy intersections.

Translation (according to Copyranter): "Bothered by uncertainty? Consultant will help you!" Now, this one is interesting to me because of the possible hidden message here. Is this woman bothered by uncertainty caused by having too many shoe choices? Or perhaps she's bothered because of the massive depiction of "Leda and the Swan" (in which Zeus rapes Leda while disguised as a swan) behind her? Subliminal message perhaps?

Translation (according to Copyranter): "Stay connected no matter where you are!" because as we see here, the little green guys are really just dirty man-pervs who objectify women in space.

I don't usually run across foreign ads, but I found this Russian mobile phone ad via: buzzfeed.com/copyranter. The ad is part of a series (half of which depict men ogling a half dressed woman. I'll pin all of those here). The whole series is sexist as hell and just wrong on so many levels... Anyway, I'll write more about that soon. In the mean time, Copyranter provides English translations as well (thanks)... this one says: " A High-quality network is vital on your business trips..."

As promised, it's "Dudes 'n' Donuts (and milk)" pinned here for your viewing (dis)pleasure. If you want to see the rest, check out "Bikers 'n' Donuts," "Babes 'n' Donuts," and of course "Cops 'n' Donuts" on Youtube...

One in a series of wacky ads for the Scion iQ. This is: "Bikers 'n' Donuts (and milk)." There's also "Dudes 'n' Donuts," "Babes 'n' Donuts," and of course "Cops 'n' Donuts." Keeping with the theme of this board I'll just post the bikers & the dudes. You can find the rest on Youtube...

Saw this ad in a magazine somewhere ;) ... anyway, it's an old spice ad in the "unleash your inner man" vein. Inner man of course being defined in very traditional ways...

From the video description: "Online Date: Sometimes the camera can add a few pounds...and a Y-chromosome."

by SpeedStick

This AT Commercial - features a man lying to a woman at a speed dating event.

Old Spice has this new "Believe In Your Smellf" campaign focused on their "champion" scented deodorants/etc. This ad features a guy listening to a self help tape that leads him to do a series of masculine things. Enjoy...

by OldSpice

Handlebar moustaches, "old-timey bare knuckle boxing" and women who love men who beat the shit out of other men = euro-retro masculinity at it's old-timey finest...

by HeinekenUSA

I just ran across this ad while reading my monthly Wired magazine. Ray Bay sunglasses have apparently been running a "Never Hide" campaign for the past 5 years but this is the first time I've seen it. This particular ad is just one of many but a little bit of Googling tells me it's the first "gay inclusive" ad in the series. Bravo Ray Ban! And a second Bravo! for running the ad in mainstream mags (I'm assuming Wired isn't the only mainstream mag it's running in) and not "ghetto-izing" it.

That Charles Barkley in drag ad reminded me of this one featuring Daniel Craig, also in drag. This ad was made for International Women's Day 2011. Dame Judy Dench is doing the voice over...

by WeAreEquals

Another "Lose Like A Man" ad where Sir Charles addresses some male stereotypes... this time he's talking about being a "Mr. Fix-it"

by WeightWatchers

More Weight Watchers "Lose Like A Man" with Charles Barkley... in this one he addresses male stereotypes like not asking for directions, making it worthy of this board!

by WeightWatchers

More of the Weight Watchers "Lose Like A Man" ad campaign featuring Charles Barkley

by WeightWatchers

It's Charles Barkley in drag! What more is there to say? Personally I give him props for doing this, it's not often a highly visible (former) athlete is willing to step out of the box like this. BTW, this ad is part of the "Lose like a man" campaign by Weight Watchers.

This Craigslist ad has been making the internet rounds for being so "ridiculously awesome" a fact that I'm hard pressed to deny... Anyway, it is pretty funny but I'm pinning it here cause it's full of masculinity humor (i.e. it does a good job poking fun of the way appealing to masculinity is used to sell stuff).

"Powwwwwwwwer... in a can!!!" More muscles and yelling from Old Spice.

Just when you thought Dr Pepper learned it's lesson from all the complaints lobbed at their first DP10 ad... they go and drop this "Explosive New Commercial" (their words)... Explosive like diarrhea perhaps.

More Axe, more Ron Swanson. Quote: "you feign interest knowing that your ultimate performance is yet to come..." AKA: Lie to get laid.

More Axe ads. The theme in these ads seems to be "do what she wants and she'll sleep with you later. Oh, and Axe shower gel will keep you going" or something along those lines.

More of the Axe Shower Gel campaign... Quote: "his body moving in ways the male body should never be seen to move" the end goal? getting laid of course... how original.

Another ad in the Axe Shower Gel "keep up" series. Is that Ron Swanson's voice BTW? The message here? Put up with her flirting with guys cause eventually she'll flirt with a woman and you'll get to have a three some...

Quote: "Show her how much she means to you in a way she'll truly appreciate. With the gift of physical violence" which of course ends with you getting laid.

"QueerMen: Don Loves Roger Mad Men Video Remix" by Elisa Kreisinger. I took a class from Elisa once and I've followed her work since. She made this remix to, in her words: "tell a story where Don subverts rather than sells traditional masculinity to finally give our hero some relief." I enjoyed it, and it fits well with what I'm doing on this board. Check it out!

Just discovered this epic Clorox 2 ad. Loads of gender role stereotyping going on here...

"Not all bad boys are created equal" Charlie Sheen the new symbol of bad boy masculinity on house arrest in a house full of women.

Hold up... could it be? Men taking care of their kids on TV? Could we finally be seeing some variations on masculinity presented in advertising? I do wonder though... who's doing the laundry when they get home? Also notice he's talking about the sport package on his mini van. But all in all, gotta say I'm impressed.

Two guys have a "not so manly moment" and resort to the easy answer... discussing sports.

Just hearing about this ad campaign. Read more about it here... ttp://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2011/07/13/no-comment-nothing-like-an-ice-cold-glass-of-sexism/ This quote about sums it up: “Finally! An ad campaign that stereotypes women AND promises to make straight men’s lives easier! Excuse me while I turn red with non-PMS-related rage."

Final poster from the SAVE campaign.

Another ad from the SAVE (Sexual Assault Voices of Edmonton) anti-rape campaign.

A poster from the "Don't Be That Guy" anti-rape campaign from SAVE (Sexual Assault Voices of Edmonton). I like their approach.

The "Survivors UK" ad about male rape. Glad the topic is being addressed, but I'm not a fan of the tag line or the image. They seem to distract from the real issue to me. Thoughts?

The "One Million Moms" group (the same ones up in arms about Ellen DeGeneres repping JC Penny) are, surprise... up in arms about this ad too! The ad is just one big sexual innuendo. See for yourselves.

another ad with a more subtle message. Women are scared of spiders, men (are supposed to) rescue their women. Notice however that not only does the spider win, but he's cuddling with his GF at the start of the ad... any connection there you think?

by MentosUS

Finally a better version of this Miller Lite Man Card ad for Mardi Gras. The content pretty much speaks for itself...

Seems pretty innocuous right? Look again... Who's that driving mom's car? The boyfriend? Why would a mom make/let her daughter's boyfriend drive her car on a date with her daughter? Gender stereotypes, that's why... they're everywhere.
