Grace For what age, @Meg Conway Rooks?
Grace Right now, here is what's coming to mind: The Wheel on the School. The Little House books (that counts as one). Little Women. Anne of Green Gables (and all LM Montgomery). The Hobbit. The Chronicles of Narnia (also counts as one). My Father's Dragon. The Wind in the Willows. Peter Pan. Caddie Woodlawn. The Call of the Wild. The Cay. (I'm past 10 now, aren't I?) So many more ... these are just what popped into my head right now. Also, poetry, poetry, poetry! And not just that "for kids" drivel. But real, sink-your-teeth-into-it, not-sure-if-I-even-get-it poetry.
Grace And you? (This is fun, we should seriously compile a long list.)
Meg Conway Rooks ok...top 10 (that made a big impact on me as a kid). 1. little house series 2. harriet the spy 3. wrinkle in time series 4. from the mixed-up files of mrs. basil e. frankweiler 5. bridge to terebithia 6. diary of anne frank 7. a separate peace 8. watership down 9. little prince 10. a tree grows in brooklyn. this IS fun. chime in, peeps!
Grace Anne Frank and A Separate Peace were also huge, huge faves of mine, but A Separate Peace was when I was older (14?). This is super fun!
Fairy Tales by e.e. cummings, illustrated by John Eaton (Eaton was only 23 at the time of its publication; it's my sister's favorite book from childhood) #childrensbooks

Kirsten Cantrell we read this last year for medieval history - it's a really thorough book about illuminated manuscripts.
Grace Oh, great to know! I think we are going to focus our efforts toward medieval history this year.
I just got a review copy of this today and it looks like a winner! There are at least half a dozen projects that I'd love to dive in on now!

A monk prays deep in the forest. It looks like he is just doing simple, ordinary tasks, such as chopping wood and tending to his garden. But as he works he is really growing prayer. The monk prays continually throughout the day and night, and as the seasons pass, he becomes a holy man. This delightful, beautifully-illustrated book teaches children that no matter what they are doing, or what hour of the day it is, they too, can pray.

Kyrie M I LOVED Zilpha Keatley Snyder when I was in the 9-10 range.
Grace Oh, good to know! It's so hard to know what is going to be too mature, especially when a child makes a sudden leap to being a completely fluent reader. I mean, I *could* hand her, you know, The Mists of Avalon to read, because she *could* read it. But that doesn't mean it's OK for her to read!
A Book of Feasts and Seasons. I'm not sure if this is different or the same as the other by the same author. #catholicism #catholichome

Cherries and Cherry Pits. Speaking of Vera B. Williams, this was one of our top three favorite read alouds as kids. I really need to get a copy for my kids. They would LOVE it -- the way Bidemmi draws with her markers is captivating. #childrensbooks #verabwilliams

Kyrie M We are reading through this right now. You would love it.
Grace @Kyrie Mead: I do not doubt it! We have always read poetry -- it's one of the most consistent things I've done with my kids -- and though we could continue with the same favorite volumes, I am so looking forward to adding some new things to our collection.
Kyrie M This one is split up into seasons, and you would love the illustrations.
Grace @Kyrie Mead: OK, it's going to be the first one I get when we get paid. I'm excited!
Kati Charin-Iriarte I can truly say this book changed my life and turned me on to poetry at a young age.
Poetry for Young People: Walt Whitman. I think we need to get some Whitman going here. Elisabeth is probably ready and would no doubt enjoy it. #childrensbooks #poetryforchildren

A Child's Anthology of Poetry. It was the Amazon reviews that convinced me this would be worth adding to our collection. I know there is overlap between many children's poetry anthologies, but there are gems to be found in all of them, too. #childrensbooks #poetryforchildren

A Child's Garden of Verses. I have been eyeing this edition for several years because of that exquisite tree on the cover. We have two editions of A child's garden of verses already, but this one might be worth adding to our collection.... #childrensbooks #poetryforchildren

Grace I can't find the one that I remember from my own childhood, but I wish I could. I have looked and looked. (I am obsessed with A Child's Garden of Verses, if you can't tell.)
Kyrie M Oooh!!! Tasha Tudor!
Grace @Kyrie Mead: I know! I can't believe it! How many copies of A Child's Garden of Verses should one family own?
Grace Because I'm starting to think 5 or 6 may not be too many....
Grace I have a problem.

Emilie Morris I recently finished "Tales from the Green Valley"--excellent!! I'm now watching "Victorian Farm" (same people) and am really enjoying it. The kids even get into it!
