Elaine Vail Yea, why did they change that anyway?

Tina Fey's Prayer for her daughter. Hilarious. “First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches. May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty. When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer. Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age. Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels. What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit. May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers. Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen.Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait. O Lord, break the Internet forever, that she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed. And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it. And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back. “My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes. Amen.” -Tina Fey

Courtney Russell here is a link to copyright law on quotes--http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

Profile picture of Grace

Grace I just read the law that Courtney linked to, and the following four points stand out: 1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes. 2. The nature of the copyrighted work. 3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole. 4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work. Looking at points 3 and 4 specifically (but all of them, really), I do not think that my repin here would constitute copyright infringement. Thanks for bringing it up, though, Jaime. Perhaps it will spark a conversation about this issue and the constant stealing of images that goes on all over the internet every day.

Melissa Bridgman Also, the photo came from a years' old AmEx magazine ad. So in theory, both the photographer, AmEx, and Tina Fey should be linked, but given the parameters of pintrest, how would one even begin to go about doing that.

Writer, Mother, Other Has anyone read the Pinterest terms of use? They clearly state that you are ONLY allowed to "pin" or upload content that you have the legal right to use and distribute. They're covering their own backside so the person who would get in trouble is the person who pinned it. :-/

Morgan Moore I need this painted on my wall.. If you only knew the number of emails I get about the punctuation on my blog- lol!

Grace @Morgan Moore: Really?! That's so rude!

Even though I don't like to pile more "shoulds" on myself, I thought this was pretty good to think about.

(Wow, this is so good. Worth clicking through!) If Only Poor People Understood Nutrition by Michelle, The Fat Nutritionist. "It seems like some people are constantly wringing their hands about how poor people eat (to wit: badly.) And the most popularly proposed solution is to teach them (“them”) more about nutrition! Or educate them in general. Because obviously they just don’t know what they’re doing. And that’s why they eat so badly, and hence, why their health tends to be poorer! And eureka! — you have a tidy solution that not only absolves financial and economic guilt, but, as a bonus, allows richer, more-edumacated people to assume the role of benevolent experts. Here comes the part where I bust up that nice, warm bubble bath." www.fatnutritioni...

Grace I don't really want to become a fat activist, because honestly, I liked the way I looked better when I was thin. BUT, I am fat, and I feel like it's sort of an elephant in the online room. Obviously none of us talk about it ... why would you? "Hi, I'm Uncommon Grace, I like knitting, photography, the occasional sewing project, and I'm fat"?! I mean, really. But it also occurred to me that it's so taboo to be fat that people are surprised by it if they see a picture or meet you in person. I don't know ... it's kind of a problem. Not just in real life, but in internet life, too.

Profile picture of Sarah Elwell

Sarah Elwell This sounds cliched, but Grace I have always thought of you as such a beautiful person, I could not care what you looked like. But fatphobia is a problem on internet as it is in real life. Especially on tumblr - omg, all the scrawny girls there! They look so unhealthy.

Profile picture of Sarah Elwell

Sarah Elwell Sorry, such terrible grammar in that comment!

Profile picture of Grace

Grace Oh, Sarah, I can't even look at tumblr anymore. It's become such a paradise for gross (imo) body art, foul language, etc., that I just can't look. I even hesitate to track down sources of pins because I never know what I'll see on tumblr. Thank you for your very sweet comment, though. You are really lovely and kind! I have seen a blogger make comments before about how surprised she's been when meeting other bloggers and they turned out to be fat -- almost like she was disappointed. I don't know why it matters, but I guess that the perception is that fat people can't keep lovely homes, have nice things, cook healthful and beautiful food, etc. People think that fat people just eat at fast food and leave the wrappers all over the floor apparently.

Sarah Elwell Yes to everything you said there.

I love this quote from Laurie Colwin. Sorry the image is a Mini Boden advert. ''Oh, domesticity!'' she writes in one of her loveliest short stories, ''The Lone Pilgrim.'' ''The wonder of dinner plates and cream pitchers. You know your friends by their ornaments. You want everything. If Mrs. A. has her mama's old jelly mold, you want one, too, and everything that goes with it -- the family, the tradition, the years of having jelly molded in it. We domestic sensualists live in a state of longing, no matter how comfortable our own places are.''

Grace Most especially the sea.

10 Ways to LOVE your body :)   1. Become aware of what your body can do each day. Remember, it is the instrument of your life, not just an ornament. 2. Don’t let your weight or shape keep you from activities you enjoy. 3. Wear comfortable clothes that you like and feel good to your body. 4. Count your blessings, not your blemishes. 5. Every evening when you go to bed, tell your body how much you appreciate what it has allowed you to do throughout the day. 6. Find a method of exercise that you enjoy and do it regularly. Don’t exercise to lose weight or to fight your body shape. Do it to make your body healthy and strong because it makes you feel good. 7. Think back to a time in your life when you felt good about your body. Tell yourself you can feel like that again, even in this body, at this age. 8. Start saying to yourself, “Life is too short to waste my time hating my body this way.” 9. Eat when you are hungry. Rest when you are tired. Surround yourself with people who remind you of your inner strength and beauty. 10. Create a list of people you admire, people who have contributed to your life, your community, or to the world. Consider whether their appearance was important to their success and accomplishments. Your body is the vehicle to your dreams. Honor it. Respect it. Fuel it.
