The Salt Mission Trail (SMT), scenic byway and cultural corridor, follows ancient central NM trade routes and footpaths. Spatially, the trail passes through high desert plains, forested valleys and mountain passes, between ruins and rural communities. Temporally and culturally, it spans pre-Columbian footpaths, trade routes, trading centers to Missions and settlement by New Spain to railroads, agrarian homesteading and cultural tourism.

The unexcavated pueblo ruins at Abo date back to the 1300s though there is evidence that Mogollon pit house builders had occupied the area beginning around 1150 AD. Located in a pass that opens to the Rio Grande Valley, this was a major trading center for the area. Article and photo by Jim Hunter

A book of memories of a Mountainair boy's rural life. There were days of labor, days of fun, days of excitement and days of adventure. There were close family ties, many cousin and other relatives. There were happy growing up years, sad, lonesome, dangerous days in WW II and then precious, fulfilling years of raising his family.
