Anne Oldenhouse Yes, you could say that. Although there are always earlier examples to be found for example in the sixties. But the latest movement was started by Magda Sayek as you can read on http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Artist Knits Recycled Newspapers into Beautiful Clothing

Golden cape made with silk from a million spiders. On average, 23,000 spiders yield around one ounce of silk. It is a highly labour-intensive undertaking, making these textiles extraordinarily rare and precious objects.

Golden cape made with silk from a million spiders. After silking, the silk was taken on cones to a silk weaving workshop where skilled weavers have mastered the special tensile properties of the silk. In the cape, the main weave is of 96 strands, the lining 48 strands and a large part of the embroidery is made using unspun 24 strand silk.

To create the textiles, spiders are collected each morning and harnessed in specially conceived silking contraptions. Trained handlers extract the silk from 24 spiders at a time. The spiders are returned to the wild at the end of each day

This collection was, in Gaytten's words, 'an X-ray of Dior' - hence the layering seen here

Catherine Carr Crochets & Knits with Glass. Each piece has been individually knitted or crocheted by hand. They are then heated and manipulated through several firings at a very high temperature, eventually emerging as a formed glass vessel. Because of this hand crafted process, all the pieces are original and individual with no two being exactly the same.
