Cleaning a wine decanter - Fill the decanter halfway with hot water, a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap, two tablespoons of white vinegar, and a cup of uncooked rice. Swirl the rice around for a few minutes to remove the residue, rinse with hot water, and air-dry.

The next time you have green onions, don't throw away the white ends. Simply submerge them in a glass of water and place them in a sunny window. Your onions will begin to grow almost immediately and can be harvested almost indefinitely. We just use kitchen scissors to cut what we need for meals. I periodically empty out the water, rinse the roots off and give them fresh water.

•To peel ginger, just use the side of a spoon. Just tilt your spoon to the side and use the edge to scrape down the ginger. The top layer should peel off easily and quickly. •Peeled ginger keeps very well for months in the fridge, if you submerge it in a high-quality, high proof alcohol. Just peel the ginger and break it into manageable pieces and then pour vodka or vermouth or even sherry (though vodka is best). If you’re planning on using it to cook with, the alcohol will just cook right off when you do. And, bonus: You’ll have ginger-infused vodka to make a new, fancy martini with.

I do this already ... it works! ...TIP FOR KEEPING BERRIES FROM GOING MOLDY!! When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider probably work best) and ten parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around. Drain, rinse if you want (though the mixture is so diluted I find you can't taste the vinegar,) and pop in the fridge. The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit, and voila! Raspberries will last a week or more, and I've had strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft. >> Brilliant!

Transfer leftover paint from large cans to small airtight resealable tubs. Make sure to affix a label to the container; note the color and the room where the paint was used.

Memory never seems to serve very well when it comes to color -- especially when you're trying to recall the exact shade of your living-room wall while shopping for fabric and furniture. Here's a way to eliminate the guesswork: After stirring paints, let stirrers dry, then write the color and room on each. Pierce ends with an awl, and string together with twine.
