Kate Pruitt Scott - Are you a qualified electrician or fire marshall? Do you have an educated opinion to share, or do you just want to keep assuming this thing you have never seen and never dealt with is not safe. I'm not just the original pinner, I MADE the thing that's pictured in the pin. I know how safe it is. Period.
Andrea Layne You will see it and keep from tripping- a problem in my old house that requires use of extension cords.
Shanna Anderson I think this is fantastic! How long did it take to wrap though??
Scott @ Twenty2 Vodka Wrapping an extension cord in layers of other materials, then braiding it, and using it as a permanent fixture cause it looks prettier than how it was purchased, is a fire hazard. Kudos for creating it @Kate Pruitt, nobody is questioning your creativity. But your adamant defense of this design's safety because you were the one to braided it doesn't mean squat. And best of luck to those who make this based on your inspiration. Personally, if I saw this plugged into anything at a friend's house, I'd unplug it immediately. I wouldn't condemn them for being unstylish, just really really unsafe.
Kate Pruitt Scott, I agree that it's a fire hazard, as anything electrical is. I disagree that it's any more of a fire hazard than a regular extension cord, and we'll just have to agree to disagree on that point. I want to say to anyone thinking of making this that yes, it carries some risk as all electrical cords do. But I asked a few of my friends an electrician and an electrical engineer if they thought this was unsafe, and they said if the original cords are intact, then this is not any less safe than the cord just on its own. You don't have to believe their opinions, or mine, but that's where I stand on this project: it's not any more of a fire hazard than just a plain cord.
